FTC: Stop grocery price hikes!

Lina Khan, Commissioner, Federal Trade Commission

Kroger and Albertsons are the two largest grocery companies in the country. If their proposed merger succeeds, their new company along with corporate giant Walmart would control more than 70% of the market in 167 different cities, and in some local markets, more than 90%. Food and grocery prices have already skyrocketed after COVID-19 and inflation have been used by CEOs to hike prices while earning record profits and shareholder payouts. On top of the FTC investigation, just this week a group of consumers filed a federal antitrust lawsuit to block the merger. The suit argues that the merger will result in higher prices, lost jobs, and reduced competition. It’s clear that the Kroger-Albertsons merger would lead to unprecedented price increases, while families are struggling to make ends meet. The FTC must stop this harmful merger before parents can no longer afford to put food on our tables.

The two largest grocery chains in the United States, Kroger and Albertsons, announced their plans to merge in October 2022. This mega-deal immediately raises red flags for violations of antitrust laws. Kroger and Albertsons together would control a significant share of the American grocery market, concentrating more than $200 billion worth of annual grocery sales and nearly 5,000 stores into the hands of one corporation. It will also result in even more price hikes, making the most important of basic necessities – food – less affordable for most families.

Families from across the United States welcome the news that the FTC is starting an investigation into the proposed merger. We urge you to complete a thorough investigation and halt the proposed merger due to its clear violation of federal antitrust laws.
