Stop Anti-Transgender Sports Ban in Ohio

Ohio Senate

Girls playing soccer

It’s Pride Month, a time we should be celebrating LGBTQ people, especially kids. But extremist Republicans are going after the rights and safety of kids. Recently, the Ohio House passed legislation that would keep transgender girls out of school sports entirely. Even worse, the policy allowed school officials to perform “genital inspections” to confirm whether an athlete is eligible for play. After widespread outrage from parents, this disgusting part of the bill was removed. Now we need to tell the Ohio State Senate: reject this bill outright. All kids belong in sports.

HB 151 is a terrible policy that seeks to bully children by keeping them from participating in school activities. An earlier version of the bill involved genital inspections of any girl suspected to be transgender. Thankfully that portion was removed, but the entire bill must be rejected.

Even beyond the horrors of the gender verification process, this policy brings harm to transgender girls who may seek to play, just like any other girl. Research shows that LGBTQ athletes on interscholastic or intramural sports teams reported higher GPAs than non-athletes and reported a greater sense of belonging to their school communities than non-athletes. Transgender girls deserve the right to thrive in school. Reject HB 151.
