Protect LGBTQ Students from Bullying

LGBTQ students

No student should face bullying in school. LGBTQ kids are more vulnerable to being called names or experiencing other forms of harassment in school. We can protect our kids with the Safe Schools Improvement Act. The Safe Schools Improvement Act is a piece of federal legislation that calls on school districts to pass policies that keep our kids safe by explaining that the problem is bullying on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

This Pride Month, join us in acting in celebration of the diversity of the LGBTQ community by adding your name to our petition in support of the Safe Schools Improvement Act now

LGBTQ students and students who are perceived to be LGBTQ experience bullying at alarming rates. As parents, we know it is time to act. Current federal law does not comprehensively and expressly focus on bullying or harassment and does not address the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ youth.

The Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA) would provide a solution for bullying at the school district level, requiring schools to have enumerated anti-bullying policies that would protect students on the bases of actual or perceived race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, and religion. By enumerating these identity groups, SSIA provides school districts with the tools they need to handle bullying on those bases.

Enumerated anti-bullying policies work. Students who attend school districts with comprehensive enumerated anti-bullying policies were more likely to report that staff intervened in bullying instances where anti-LGBTQ remarks were used. Further, students experienced less instances of victimization than those with a generic or no anti-bullying policy. Vote yes on SSIA and protect LGBTQ students this Pride month!
