Roblox: Little Kids Deserve Privacy!

Dave Baszucki, CEO, Roblox

Roblox is one of the most popular online gaming platforms for young children, attracting millions of users as young as 6 or 7. However Roblox defaults even very young users to teen and adult privacy settings, putting them at risk for serious harm. Roblox needs to make privacy and safety the default for kids!

Worldwide, more than 28 million kids under 13 play Roblox every day, and two-thirds of all 9-12 year olds in the US have accounts. Yet when a young child signs up for an account, the default settings on that account are the least private available – an experience more appropriate for an older teen or adult. Accounts for kids as young as 7 automatically:

  • Allow strangers to text chat with them

  • Show content and experiences rated 13+

  • Have all parental approvals and controls turned off

These settings create a host of significant risks for young children, including exposure to sexual predators or scammers, access to inappropriate content, uncontrolled on-platform spending, overuse and addiction, and more. Elementary school-aged children aren’t mature enough to navigate an unregulated open platform like Roblox without privacy protections, and parents don’t always know how to change default settings. Roblox has a responsibility to their youngest users and must default privacy settings for kids under 13 to the most private options.

Dear Mr. Baszucki,

Your game Roblox is one of the most popular online gaming platforms for young children, attracting millions of users as young as 6 or 7. However Roblox defaults even very young users to teen and adult privacy settings, putting them at risk for serious harm. Roblox needs to make privacy and safety the default for kids and we’re asking you to make that happen.

When a young child signs up for an account, the default settings on that account are the least private available – an experience more appropriate for an older teen or adult. Accounts for kids as young as 7 automatically:

-Allow strangers to text chat with them
-Show content and experiences rated 13+
-Have all parental approvals and controls turned off

These settings create a host of significant risks for young children, including exposure to sexual predators or scammers, access to inappropriate content, uncontrolled on-platform spending, overuse and addiction, and more. Elementary school-aged children aren’t mature enough to navigate an unregulated open platform like Roblox without privacy protections, and parents don’t always know how to change default settings. You have a responsibility to your youngest users and must default privacy settings for kids under 13 to the most private options.
