Snapchat: Remove Snapchat's "My AI" Feature for Children

Evan Spiegel, CEO, Snap Inc

Family's possessions removed after eviction.

Snapchat recently released a new feature called My AI that shows up right in a user’s friend list. Snap says this artificial intelligence product is supposed to do fun things, like answer trivia questions or suggest what you should make for dinner.

But advocates and journalists have already found the very dark side of Snap's My AI. It told one account claiming to be a 13 year-old girl how to lie to her parents about going on a trip with a 31 year-old man. It told another child account how to cover up a bruise when Child Protective Services came to his house. And it gave advice to an account claiming to be 15 years-old on how to cover up the smell of alcohol on his breath and marijuana in his room.

Snap AI is another example of a Big Tech company experimenting on our kids for profit with little regard for their safety.

Snap can’t make My AI safe for kids – they said right there in the launch announcement that this new technology couldn’t be trusted. We'll take them at their word.

Snap’s My AI is a dangerous experiment that could have long term effects on our children. Sign now to tell Snap to take down My AI for users under 18.

Snap’s new My AI feature is another example of a Big Tech company experimenting on our kids with no regard for their health and safety. Snap admitted in your launch announcement that My AI could give inaccurate information and claimed you were relying on your users to tell you when My AI got something wrong.

That’s not how it works. An AI pretending to be a friend to a child that gives harmful information – like how to hide being groomed by a sexual predator from your parents – isn’t something that can be undone with a tech ticket. Snap has no idea the long term harm this technology could do to children.

It’s clear Snap doesn’t know how to make My AI safe for kids, either. There are infinite ways that kids could get answers that are wrong or, like the examples we’ve already seen, downright dangerous.

We demand Snapchat immediately take down My AI for users under 18.
